About Us

Wakefield Rent Deposit Scheme

Wakefield Rent Deposit Scheme (WRDS) was established in 1996 as a not-for-profit organisation, managed by Wakefield Cathedral and supported by Wakefield MDC. It has delivered services to the single homeless across the Wakefield District since then.

Our clients are all:

  • Over 18
  • In receipt of benefit or low income
  • Without responsibility for children
  • Homeless or potentially homeless
  • Capable of independent living with support

WRDS is funded by the Supporting People (SP) funding stream, and operates in line with the SP Quality Assessment Framework.

WRDS delivers good quality, responsive pre and post tenancy support to homeless clients from a WMDC office base. It mainly supports clients in private rented property, and can provide a written bond agreement to landlords in place of cash. Referrals can be made by any agency working with clients that meet our referral criteria (as above), and we accept self referrals.

WRDS works in partnership with the authority, delivering the First Rung project, and managing the seconded Rough Sleeper Worker.

WRDS is an active and successful example of the creative use of the voluntary sector, in partnership with the local authority.

WRDS contributes to all the key aims of the councilís Homelessness Strategy . These are:

  • Prevention with early intervention
  • Choice and control
  • Sustaining high quality settled solutions

WRDS contributes to all the key aims of the councilís Supporting People Strategy.

First Rung

The First Rung project is a homeless prevention project; working with young people aged 16 Ė 25 who are homeless or threatened with homelessness. First Rung operates by referral through Wakefield Council.

The Rough Sleeper Worker

The Rough Sleeper Worker is funded by Wakefield Council, and works as part of WRDS. She works across the district, offering drop in sessions at various locations (see downloads). She assesses the barriers that individual rough sleepers encounter, and looks to address those issues so that her clients may access housing. She offers both pre and post tenancy support.
